事情发生在1940年，格奥尔被作为法西斯叛徒，他逃亡到了仅有的安全之地----马赛。在危急时刻他还帮忙答应朋友一个请求，给住在附近旅馆的作家乔治送两封信之后，他就可以被安排前往马赛。无奈之下他答应了，当他到达旅店房间时，作家却因害怕城市沦陷而自己自杀身亡。无奈之下，格奥尔带走了作家留下来的东西最后的手稿和两封没有送出去的信，一封信是写给自己的妻子，另一封信则是墨西哥大使馆的签证保证书，保证书能够使他顺利的逃亡到美洲，于是他出发了，带着这些材料护送者，一位腿部受伤的非洲难民偷渡马赛，刚到达马赛的时候，他发现同伴的伤口溃烂，感染而死他躲开警方的追查，将同伴死亡的消息带给同伴的家人，很巧的是他遇见了同伴的妻子和儿子又发生了一系列的故事…
