1348年黑死病肆虐欧洲，造成整个英格兰尸横遍野，在这个人人自危的年代，奥斯蒙(埃迪·雷德梅尼 饰)身为一个年轻的传教士还是坚守着自己的岗位和信仰。骑士奥立克带着手下雇佣兵来到了这个教堂，因为奥斯蒙所在的村庄居然没有一人感染这个可怕的瘟疫，因此当局者派奥利克前去了解情况。奥斯蒙因为了解自己的村庄，于是就主动成为奥利克的向导。其实奥斯蒙有自己的目的，因为他听说这个村庄的人们背叛了上帝，居然相信邪教举行奇怪的仪式招魂。他们来到村庄经过了解知道这个美丽的乌托邦是由女巫兰吉瓦(卡里斯·范·侯登 饰)领导的，传说中她可以让死者复活，奥斯蒙知道她就是自己要就地正法的那个巫邪之人，但是当他知道真正的秘密后，奥斯蒙却不知道要如何在自己的信仰和这个美好的村庄之间做选择了。
