In 1975, director Jacques Rivett took one of his "Ghost Stories Series" - "Fantasy Love", Flash bright debut. This series plans to make four "ghost" movies based on the four traditional movie genres of love, detective, western, and song and dance, which together form a unified story
"The Story of Mary and Julian" is the first "love movie" in this plan. Jacques Rivett shot two of the films before starting production on The Story of Marie and Julien, which was then unexpectedly discontinued. Rivett explained: "The shooting of two films, each with its own style, I am very tired, but the trap I set for myself".
However, the passage of time has not dampened Rivett's love for the scheme. More than 20 years later, he decided to pick up this unfinished brainchild again. "Falling in Love" was able to come out again, continuing Rivett's early vision.
