The film was released in 1994 and is a feature film produced by Era International Co., Ltd. Director Zhang Yimou, starring Ge You, Gong Li, Jiang Wu, Niu Ben, Guo Tao. Adapted from Yu Hua's novel of the same name, the film won the Jury Prize, Best Actor Award and other awards at the 47th Cannes International Film Festival. The male protagonist is called Fugui, and he is a son of a rich family. He has a wife named Jiazhen, and they have a daughter named Fengxia. Fugui is a gambler by nature, and his wife advised him to quit gambling many times, but she just refused to listen. In desperation, his wife took their daughter and left him. After that, he became more gambler, even lost all the family property, and lived by selling his mother's jewelry and renting a dilapidated house. A year later, Jiazhen appeared in front of him with a newborn baby in his arms. Fugui changed his ways and started singing shadow puppetry, and his life was quite comfortable. However, the good times didn't last long, the war broke out suddenly, and Fugui was also arrested and made a young man. After several twists and turns, he finally returned home to reunite with his family
