The movie "Whale" is based on the play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter. The story takes place in a dilapidated apartment in rural Idaho. The 272-kilogram English teacher Charlie (played by Brandon Fraser) chooses to live in seclusion and stubbornly buries himself in food. In middle age, Charlie abandoned his family in order to be with a same-sex lover. However, when his lover died, Charlie sank into grief and guilt, indulging in binge eating behavior. He tries to mend his broken relationship with his 17-year-old daughter Ellie (played by Sadie Sink).

As Charlie draws closer to his inescapable fate, his friend Liz ( Hong Zhou), a cynical atheist nurse, and young missionary Elder Thomas (Ty Simpkins), all try to find a redeeming will in Charlie, both physically and mentally.
