故事以19岁的女孩里子（由二阶堂富美饰演）和她的母亲茑江（由工藤夕贵饰演）为中心。二战末期的东京，空袭接连不断，许多人失去了生命。幸存者们躲在防空洞中艰难度日，物价飞涨，食物短缺。在这样的环境下，里子和母亲仍然坚持奋力求生。
里子的邻居市毛是某银行分行的行长（由长谷川博己饰演）。他的小提琴声在战乱中带来温暖和关怀，让人们暂时忘却战争的阴霾。市毛由于体检不合格而没有上战场，他的妻子已经疏散到乡下，他独自留在动荡不安的东京。
