这部电影重要讲述二战时期一位著名的摄影师尤金·史密斯与1971年隐居日本，然而当时的日本氮肥公司将废水排入大海，当地几乎所有人都患上了一种名为“水俣病”的怪病，而尤金·史密斯也接受了《生活》杂志编辑罗伯特·海斯的的委托，拿起相机，不顾个人安危，拍下了摄影史上震撼人心的照片，让全世界都关注到这一事件。
