This play focuses on the shameful British Labor Party cabinet minister John Stonehouse, telling the story of his life and times. Matthew Macfadyen plays John, and Keeley Hawes plays his wife Barbara. In November 1974, John Stonehouse, a highly successful member of Harold Wilson's (Kevin R. McNally) government, disappeared on the beach at a large luxury hotel in Florida. He left behind a pile of neatly folded clothes and swam into the sea trying to fake his own death. The shocked public and media thought the North Walsall MP drowned or was eaten by sharks, leaving behind his loving wife Barbara and three young children. Charismatic, charismatic and confident, Stonehouse made an impression on Prime Minister Harold Wilson and staunch supporters of the Labor Party from the early days of his career in Parliament. A working-class man, a graduate of the London School of Economics and a service in the Royal Air Force during World War II, he looked like an ideal candidate for a career in politics. As the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that his reputation as a family man overshadows the truth. Stonehouse began an affair with his secretary, Sheila Buckley (Emer Heatley), and became a spy for the Czech Secret Service in the 1960s. Stonehouse deliberately steals the identity of a recently deceased voter, but his complicated financial situation and relationships end up costing them. He applied for a passport in the name of the deceased and began to weave an elaborate plot to try to start a new life in Australia. However, he was arrested by the Australian police who mistakenly believed that he was the fugitive Lord Lucan, and the previous plan fell through. Brought back to the UK by Scotland Yard detectives, Stonehouse found himself crucial to securing a Labor majority
