托尔金这部影片，但是上映后的反响并没有预想当中热烈。因为这部电影并没有其他电影中的跌宕起伏，宗教差异等剧情，这部电影主要讲述了托尔金年轻时期的故事。它表现良好，但是最终的结果却不尽人意。剧情片淡化了这个故事的魅力。
这部电影主要讲述了托尔金从小被遗弃，和他的弟弟一起被一名天主教神父收养。稍微长大些，托尔金被一群贵族学校录取。在那里，他遇见了一群男孩，虽然一开始的相处不是那么友好，但是后来因为他们对文学和艺术的热爱，他们成为了很好的朋友。托尔金也进入了教授的课堂，虽然教授是被劝说的收下了托尔金。而后托尔金陷入了一段姐弟恋。但是此时第一次世界大战爆发，托尔金被迫入伍当兵，他和周围人的关系也变得脆弱。
