"Beyond the cloud, the promised place" is a feature-length animation created by Japanese director Makoto Shinkai in 2004 Movie. This film is Makoto Shinkai's third work after "She and Her Cat" and "The Voice of the Stars", and it is also his first feature-length animation work with a duration of 91 minutes.

The story happened in the distant days, when they made a promise to see An agreement that seems impossible to fulfill. After the end of World War II, Japan was divided into two regions, North and South, due to different views on the war. Hokkaido is ruled by Union, built in a mysterious "giant tower", and secretly carrying out some kind of plan. In Honshu, which is occupied by the US military, no one knows the true purpose of the tower. Looking from the middle of the strait, the "giant tower" can be clearly seen, which is desirable and awe-inspiring. Hiroki Fujisawa and Takuya Shirakawa, teenagers from Aomori Prefecture, have always dreamed of flying to the "giant tower" with their own strength. So, they used the waste left by the army to assemble a small aircraft in the post-war ruins in the mountains. Sawatari Sayari, who is also interested in the "giant tower", is also their peers. The three of them feel that if they don't get in touch with the "giant tower", they will never know when they will have this opportunity.

However, Sayuri was sent to a hospital in Tokyo for some reason , into a long slumber. This made Haoji and Takuya lose their motivation to move forward and gave up their dream of flying. Hiroki was admitted to a high school in Tokyo, while Takuya continued to study in a high school in Aomori, and the two gradually became estranged on their respective paths. Over the years, Hiroki lived in Tokyo, and he dreamed of Sayuri more and more frequently. Accidentally, he learned that Sayuri has suffered from memory impairment of unknown cause since the summer of fifteen years old, and has been falling into a deep sleep in the hospital.
